Our Background

Karanja is a city in the Indian state of Maharashtra, a holy place known for being home to a number of ancient temples and mosques. In addition to its religious significance, Karanja is also known for its scenic beauty, with lush green hills, fertile fields, and winding rivers.

The name is also associated with the pride of the British India Line, a 155m long steam ship launched in 1948 which carried passengers on bi-monthly voyages between India and Africa. The vessel carried thousands of families, businesspeople and tourists from then Bombay to Kenya, Taganyika, Zanzibar, Mozambique and Durban, South Africa - including our forefathers - until she was sold in 1976.

And with many of them came their recipes and traditions of pickling, one of the oldest forms of food preservation since the dawn of civilisation. The addition of vinegar, oils and Eastern spices has been a staple in our homes in South Africa - a connection to our roots, but the heartiness and delicious taste has been embraced by our diverse nation.

We are proud to launch our range of pickles, spices and condiments under this name which bears meaningful significance to our brand and our vision of creating a taste journey to the roots of spice and pickles.
